Reportage

The Baka, known in the Congo as Bayaka are an ethnic group inhabiting the southeastern rainforests of Cameroon, northern Republic of Congo, northern Gabon, and southwestern Central African Republic. They have been historically called pygmies and are the most populous hunter gatherers people on earth. Living in groups as hunter-gatherers they establish temporary camps of huts constructed of bowed branches covered in large leaves. The men and women hunt and trap in the surrounding forest, using nets to great effect as well as arrows. Fishing is sometimes done with a poison they extract from forest plants. They obtain honey from beehives in the forest canopy that they eat or trade in Bantu villages. The group is communal and makes decisions by consensus.
