Early morning at low tide Mari Garcia and her mother Teofila Moreno step into the mud towards the mangroves where for six hours they will dig for black clams keeping an eye out for snakes, scorpions, centipedes and a nasty mud-dwelling fish called the pejesapo whose bite causes the flesh to rot.
